Meet the Iron Nun, the 82-Year-Old Ironman World Record Holder Who Can't Be Stopped
Carly Cardellino
Sister Madonna Buder is a Roman Catholic nun — and the oldest person ever (man or woman) to finish an Ironman triathlon, which consists of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, and 26.2 mile run (aka, a marathon).
Buder has completed more than 340 triathlons, more than 45 of them Ironmans. She spoke to Cosmopolitan.com's Carly Cardellino about her training schedule, running the Boston marathon during the bombing, and what advice she'd give to her twentysomething self.
I was never into running as a kid, although my mother did have a picture of me running from the nurse when I was 2, so I guess I was already on the move. In my day, they didn't have [organized races, including marathons and triathlons] for women. Those races came out for women eventually, but what we had was just organized by schools. At age 14, I decided I wanted to be a nun from the influence of the Visitation Sisters at the all-girls Visitation Academy in St. Louis, Mo., that my parents put me in after sixth grade. It was then that I realized the importance of being of service to others. So, at age 23 I entered a convent called the Sisters of the Good Shepard in St. Louis and served there until 1990 when I changed orders and was sent to Spokane, Wash., to serve with the Sisters for Christian Community.
